The Number of Manufacturing Jobs is Down, but Output is UP

Submitted by Greg Conder, P.E.

Most Americans are aware of the decline in manufacturing jobs over the past 30 years, but are unaware that manufacturing output has actually increased.

This report from Pew Research says 80% of Americans know that the total number of manufacturing jobs has decreased. However, only 35% were aware that manufacturing output has actually increased over the same time span.

Of course, the reason output has been able to increase is because of increased productivity due to increased efficiencies in equipment and manufacturing processes.

Not all manufacturing sectors have seen increased output. While computer and electronic products saw the most gain, apparel and leather goods actually declined.
