The job outlook for CNC machinists, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), does not appear to take into consideration current efforts to reshore some manufacturing back to the USA.
The BLS data estimates there were 298,000 machinists in 2023. The projected employment levels for 2033 are 303,000. This is only a 2% increase over a 10-year period.
The BLS points out that employment growth is expected to be limited due to technological advancements in automation and robotics. This may be true because advancements in manufacturing have been happening for a long time and will continue.
However, since the baseline data for the BLS begins in 2023, current policies like the efforts to reshore manufacturing have not been considered in the 2033 projection. It will be interesting to see the impact of these policies on manufacturing and the job outlook for CNC machinists.
