Project Prometheus – Bringing AI to Manufacturing

Jeff Bezos has created Project Prometheus with the aim of bringing AI into manufacturing and engineering. Mr. Bezos is most noted for founding the company Amazon among others.

$100 billion is being sought to fund the project according to Yahoo. The fund is designed to be a “manufacturing transformation vehicle”. About $6.2 billion was raised in earlier funding efforts.

According to Axios, the goal is not to automate factories and put workers out of work.

The goal is to use AI to optimize pre-production design, machinery, processes and prototyping. We are skeptical that automating factories are not part of the equation. Manufacturing jobs in the US have been declining for years because of NAFTA and automation.

Even with protectionist measures like tariffs, manufacturing jobs were still in decline in 2025.

What is the Impact on Small Manufacturers?

We are a small precision CNC machine shop. We are hopeful that AI will help designers consider manufacturing constraints and capabilities in their designs. That would be beneficial to us.

AI could also help us in predicting the need for machine maintenance and tool replacement. That would be beneficial to us. Ultimately, if all manufacturing is going to be done by robots, that would not be beneficial to us.

How can we help you?
