Trends in 3D Printing for 2023

4D Printing

Record installations of 3D printing systems, a type of Additive Manufacturing (AM) system, is expected to be one of the trends in 2023.

According to 3D Printing Industry, another key trend to watch is the augmentation of 3D printing systems by AI (Artificial Intelligence). AI is having an impact on many systems, including product design.

3D printing started as a system to help with prototyping. It is still used that way, but the pace at which the system is producing higher volume components is increasing.

3D printed components are being used in many business sectors including energy, aerospace and healthcare.

Trends in Printable Materials

Printable materials for metals are constantly being developed. Aluminum, steel, titanium and copper are examples. This may lead to 3D printing being used more for “production” parts.

As an unique example for the healthcare industry, the fine folks at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) are developing a soft material that is metal free, conducts electricity and can be utilized in 3D printing.

They believe this material can replace metal implants that are now used to stimulate nerves and interface with the heart, brain and other organs in the body.
