Is Renewable Energy Really Replacing Fossil Fuels?

Is Renewable Energy Really Replacing Fossil Fuels?

Trillions of dollars have been spent on renewable energy sources over the past few years, but is renewable energy really replacing fossil fuels?

Types of Renewable Energy

Types of renewable energy include wind, solar, tidal and geothermal.

Types of Fossil Fuels

Types of fossil fuels include oil, natural gas and coal.

The World’s Energy Mix

According to the Visual Capitalist, 77% of global energy was sourced from fossil fuels in 2021. As a reference point, this percentage was 79% in 2010 and 77% in 2000. This is not much change.

Somewhat surprising was that coal represented 22% in 2000 and represented 25% in 2021. The countries of India and China are large consumers of coal.

Total world energy consumption increased by 44% between 2000 and 2021.

According to an article from Reuters, fossil fuels accounted for 82% of global energy consumption in 2022. Still not a reduction. How can this be?

World Population Growth

The world’s population grew by 29% from 2000 to 2021 and is still growing. All people need to use energy and the products energy helps create to live a prosperous life. Most all countries are trying to grow their economies and living standards for their citizens.

The need for all sources of energy will keep growing as long as the population continues to grow and living standards increase.

It does not appear that renewable energy sources will be overtaking fossil fuels anytime soon. It seems the world needs more sources of all types of energy.
