Custom Parts for Surgical Technology Teaching Labs

Manufacturing custom parts for a surgical technology teaching lab was interesting work. Most interesting was to learn how the parts were to be used.

The part was rather simple from a manufacturing perspective. We simply sheared and bent some stainless steel to be used as drainage ramps into existing trays.

Please note – the parts we made were to be used by a surgical technology teaching lab at a school. They are not certified for use in a hospital operating room.

The drainage ramp and tray are part of a set up for neuro patties. The patties are like sponges that absorb blood and other fluids. They are primarily used in surgeries involving brain tissue or spinal nerves. A pattie has a tracking string to make sure it is removed prior to closing the incision.

The patties are used in a damp condition. They are soaked in a saline solution and placed on the ramp so that excess solution can flow back to the tray.

Surgical technologists work with doctors, nurses and others in an operating room environment. It was very insightful to have the opportunity to make these custom parts for a surgical technology
teaching lab.
